I received an advanced copy of 9 Common Lies Christians Believe: And Why God’s Truth Is Infinitely Better from the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
What I’ve observed about Shane Pruitt, the author of 9 Common Lies Christians Believe, over the last 4 years is that he’s a skilled teacher and Biblical communicator. He’s a disciple of Jesus that has a deep passion for reaching the lost and making more disciples.
After being a reader of Shane’s blog for the last few years, I knew that we were going to find in his book deep thoughts, clear Biblical teaching, and written in a way that you’d think Shane were sitting with you having coffee and conversation.
That’s exactly what I found in 9 Common Lies Christians Believe. Plus, he left me with thoughts to process and truths to grab hold of.
Lies Christians Believe
Whether for good or bad, and it’s usually with good intention, there are things that we tend to believe, or well-meaning things that we try to comfort others (or ourselves) with, sometimes without actually believing them.
9 Common Lies Christians Believe takes a look at some of the most common cliches and well-meaning things that we tend to use but just aren’t Biblical.
Chapter 1, God Won’t Give Me More Than I Can Handle is a terrific opening salvo to this book. The very personal illustrations and stories Shane shares from the beginning of the book really help bring you in.
Shane goes from there to thoughtfully unpack each one of these 9 lies, and then shares what God’s word actually teaches on subjects like following your heart and I don’t think God likes me.
If we were able to handle everything in life on our own, then why would we need God? -Shane Pruitt
Why this Book is Important
9 Common Lies Christians Believe: And Why God’s Truth Is Infinitely Better has come at a pivotal time for the church. I believe this to be true because there is a growing amount of compromise, untruth, and sometimes just bad teaching.
Shane takes a hard look at things, yet remains caring and mindful in his approach to dispelling some of the most well-meaning but unbiblical statements like God won’t give you more than you can handle.
His conversational style is approachable and thought-provoking. There are subjects like forgiveness and thinking someone can’t or will never change. These are the discussion that will help to mature many Christians in their thinking.
Who 9 Common Lies Christians Believe is Written for
The 9 lessons are backed with Scripture and are personally applicable to your life. This book is useful for mature Christians and for those new to following Jesus.
My recommendation is that you pick this book up, read it, and share it.
My own personal favorite is chapter 5, Follow Your Heart. Shane does an amazing job of unpacking this well-meaning yet poisonous lie that many Christians not only believe, but readily offer up as advice.
Culture tells us this is the ultimate determining factor in making decisions: “What is your heart telling you to do?” -Shane Pruitt
Small groups could really benefit by reading and discussing 9 Common Lies Christians Believe together and studying the Scripture connected to each chapter.
The bottom line is that we have so many well meaning yet unbiblical things that have crept into Christianity. We need to expose them and find freedom in what God’s word teaches us.
9 Common Lies Christians Believe: And Why God’s Truth Is Infinitely Better couldn’t have arrived at a better time to help us do just that!
