My Mission to You: Why I Write
Hi, I’m Gene and I write about the world we live in and navigating life through the lens of scripture. Another way to say that is simple theology for a messy life. And by simple, I don’t mean easy!
My passion is to help you embrace Christ, become more like Him, and to apply Scripture to your daily life in practical ways.
Sometimes this means wrestling through topics, cultural issues that affect your faith, and some of the events that impact us and our world. Sometimes it’s funny, serious or entertaining. It’s occasionally uncomfortable, educational, or even a bit controversial. Maybe all of the above, perhaps even at once.
And it’s often a mess.
My promise to you is to be truthful and honest. I’m not going to compromise the truth about God or His word around the ideology of social acceptance, but I will be respectful.
When we dig through eternal truths together, I’m convinced that there will be discussions to be had, stories to tell and songs to be sung, even though you do not want me to do the singing! Kidding aside, life is short, there are deep truths to discuss and we only have so many pages to do this in and I want you to join me.
Even when it gets uncomfortable.
How to Connect
The best way to stay connected is to subscribe to my weekly email. I share an encouraging yet short email every week, with more than 1,000 people. Through these, many people hit reply and we communicate one-on-one.
It’s a true honor and privilege to connect with my audience and I sincerely cherish that.
- You can leave your comments on any of the posts, or you could join the Simple Theology Messy Life community on MeWe.
- If you’d like to connect one on one, feel free to drop me a message. I try to respond to everyone.
- We also have a private Telegram group. If you would like an invitation, just let me know. (Telegram works a lot like Whatsapp, only with more privacy/security and without the Facebook machine behind it).
Where you can find my work
I’ve written nearly 100 articles and have reviewed books and Bibles that you can freely read and share. Or, if you prefer to study more in-depth, you can find the first of my study guides in my shop.
Who Am I?
I’ve been writing since I could hold a crayon, at times on the furniture to the dismay of my Mom. Though I didn’t know what it was then, I began blogging eons ago in terms of internet time (1998!), even though I don’t think it was called that.
I ditched my first career in the coffee industry in order to serve people and share hope. You’ll still find me brewing and enjoying some of my favorite coffee, like Ethiopia Harrar Natural, and sometimes I even roast my own.
In January 2015, Simple Theology, Messy Life was launched in order to help kick open a few doors on conversation while staying true to my calling: serving people, sharing hope. I do this because I love Biblical truth and I want to understand more and I have a desire to teach others along the way.
Teaching and writing are a few of my greatest passions, and I especially love to teach through writing!
My wife and I were married in 1991 and have served in full-time ministry since 2007 in both Eastern and Northern Europe, and at various places in North America. We have 2 grown daughters, one granddaughter, and a grandson.
I graduated from Bible University Canada, Nova Scotia with my Bachelor of Biblical Studies (BBS) and later with my Master in Ministry (MMin).
