My Mission
To help believers embrace Christ, become more like Him, and apply Scripture to their daily lives in practical ways.
At Simple Theology, Messy Life, I help you navigate the complexities of daily life through the lens of Scripture. My mission is to help you:
- Embrace Christ more deeply
- Grow in Christlikeness
- Apply Scripture practically to your daily life
- Understand complex biblical truths in accessible ways
I believe theology doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. While the concepts we explore aren’t always easy, I present them in ways that make sense in real life—where things often get messy.

My Values
In everything I write and teach, I’m guided by these core commitments:
- Truth & Authenticity
I promise to be truthful and honest, never compromising God’s Word to accommodate or appease social trends. While I address challenging topics in a loving manner and with respect, I remain firmly grounded in biblical truth. - Practical Application
My focus is helping you move beyond head knowledge to heart transformation. Every article, study guide, and resource I create aims to help you apply Scripture to your daily life in practical ways. - Respectful Dialogue
Life’s important questions deserve thoughtful discussion. Whether we’re wrestling with cultural issues or exploring theological concepts, I maintain a tone of respect—even when addressing controversial topics. - Personal Connection
I value genuine relationships with my readers. Whether through email exchanges, comments, or our private community groups, I’m committed to fostering real conversations about faith and life. Granted, I do not have all of the answers, but I am willing to help dig for guidance! - Continuous Growth
I’m a fellow traveler on this journey of faith. As I study, write, and teach, I remain committed to growing in my own understanding and relationship with Christ.
About Gene
My journey began in the coffee industry, but my calling led me to ministry. Since 2007, I’ve served alongside my wife in full-time ministry across Eastern and Northern Europe and North America. We’ve been married since 1991 and are blessed with two grown daughters and four grandchildren.

I launched Simple Theology, Messy Life in January 2015 to combine my lifelong passion for writing with my desire to teach biblical truth. With degrees in Biblical Studies and Ministry from Bible University Canada, Nova Scotia, I’m committed to making theology accessible and practical for everyday life.
When I’m not writing or teaching, you’ll find me building websites and brewing my favorite Ethiopian coffee blends—old habits from my coffee industry days die hard!
